Lynda Barnes Takes ALL EVENTS TITLE at the Women's Championships
RENO, Nev. - The two-year run of the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center came to a close Monday as the final squad of the 2014 event stepped off the championship lanes.
The 81-day event kicked off April 11 and ushered in a new era in the tournament's 95-year history, switching from five-player to four-player teams for the first time. The 2014 USBC Women's Championships also featured new divisions and an all-scratch format for the first time since 2009.
During the 2014 event, six competitors joined the exclusive 50-Year Club, and five bowlers rolled perfect games, the most in tournament history, bringing the all-time total to 25.
Two of the five bowlers who rolled perfect games, USBC Hall of Famers Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, and Jeanne Naccarato of Tacoma, Wash., used the momentum from their big games to put themselves in position to capture titles at the 2014 tournament.
Barnes started her 2014 tournament campaign by helping Bowlieve In A Cure of Arlington, Texas, into the lead in Diamond Team with a 2,819 series. Her perfect game came the next day during doubles and helped her to a Division 1 All-Events-leading 2,140 total. She had sets of 779 in doubles, 683 in singles and 678 in team.
Bowlieve In A Cure was led by Tennelle Milligan's 752 series and included Team USA member Shannon O'Keefe (724) and Kendra Gaines (665).
Naccarato sandwiched her 300 between games of 222 and 224 for a 746 series and teamed with fellow USBC Hall of Famer Robin Romeo of Newhall, Calif., who added 733, for a 1,479 series to lead Division 1 Doubles.
Former collegiate standout Danielle van der Meer of Washington, Ill., capped her first Women's Championships appearance with games of 258, 248 and 245 for a 751 set and the lead in Division 1 Singles.
The new format at the Women's Championships includes four average-based divisions in team and six divisions for doubles, singles and all-events. All standings are unofficial and pending final verification.
The 2014 event marked the second consecutive year the Women's Championships was held at the RSCC and third of four consecutive visits to The Biggest Little City in the World. The 2015 tournament will be held at the nearby National Bowling Stadium alongside the new USBC Mixed. Registration for both events now is open.
